Mona Childs Sims

Mona Childs Sims, of 6629 Hawkinsville Road, Macon went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 31, 2013. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home and may be contacted at the residence of Barbara Hardy, 6629 Hawkinsville Road. Services will be held Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Hart’s Mortuary, Cherry Street. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery

Mrs. Sims, the daughter of the late James Robert Childs and the late Minnie Arlene Chambers Childs, was born in Gray, Georgia on December 19, 1919. She was the wife of the late Byron Idom, who died in World War II, and the former wife of the late Ernest James Sims. Mrs. Sims was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church.

Mrs. Sims is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Hardy of Macon, Mai-Lan and Bobby Ledbetter of Dahlonega, Georgia, and Nena and Donnie Gilreath of Macon; ten grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, Mason Watson, of Jeffersonville, Georgia.

Herman Franklin Brinkley

Herman Franklin Brinkley, 53, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013. Herman, beloved, wonderful father and husband was a friend to everyone who him. He fought the good fight with his battle with cancer. Christ said, “My grace is sufficient for thee, for my power is made perfect in your weakness.” May God of love and peace be with us all!

Herman was a man surrounded by loving family members, his wife and children, his church family and his wonderful Wal-Mart family. His heart matched his size and all have been blessed to know him and to be loved by him. To God be the Glory!

Herman was a member and Elder of the Norton Evangelistic Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Norton Police Department Auxiliary. He was the store manager at the Norton Walmart with 22 years of service to the company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Redden and Freida Brinkley.

Herman is survived by his wife, Sandra Brinkley of Norton, Va.; a son, Kendall Brinkley of Norton, Va.; a daughter, Terri Brinkley of Norton, Va.; four grandchildren, Evan, Maelie, Kinsley, and Tyler; special son, Armen Slyter; a brother, David Brinkley and his wife Pam of Georgia; two sisters, Diane Lawrence and her husband Stuart of Maryland, Brenda Abee and her husband Tony of Georgia; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from noon until 7 p.m.Wednesday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Mike Porter officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home to travel in procession to the cemetery.

Mrs. Louise Hathcock

Mrs. Louise Hathcock, age 82, of Dahlonega, passed away Saturday November 2, 2013, at Northside Forsyth Hospital in Cumming, Ga.

Mrs. Hathcock was a native and former resident of Dawson County who had lived in Lumpkin County for the past 20 years. She was employed at the Dawson County Daycare Center for a number of years and was of the Baptist faith.

Louise was the daughter of the late Harve and Goldie Whitmire Wehunt and was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman Hathcock; and a son, Ricky Hathcock.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Herman and Brenda Hathcock, Hiram, Ga., Lane and Brenda Hathcock, Dawsonville; and Gary and Heather Hathcock, Dahlonega; sister, Ruth Crowe, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; grandchildren, Josh Hathcock, Wesley Hathcock, Kimberly and Matt Irvin, Zach Hathcock, Garrison Hathcock, Mackynna Hathcock, Seth and Elizabeth Hathcock; great-grandchildren, Emma Irvin, Morgan Hathcock, and Owen Hathcock. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hathcock are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Rev. Lamar Day and Rev. Marty Abernathy will officiate.

Interment will follow in Dawsonville Memorial Gardens in Dawsonville.

Mrs. Geraldine Wood McClure

Mrs. Geraldine Wood McClure, of Dahlonega, passed away Friday, November 1 2013 at Gold City Convalescent Center. She was a much-beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor. She was also a devout Christian and a member of Yahoola Baptist Church.Among her many accomplishments, she had taught Sunday school and Bible School, and she had also taught children at the Dahlonega Learning Tree in the 1970’s and 1980’s. She also occasionally kept children in her home. She loved children very much and always tried to teach them to treat other people right and to love the Lord.In her later years, she worked with the elderly at the Dahlonega Senior Center, doing quilting and other crafts.She always enjoyed having family and friends in her home for holiday celebrations, especially after her grandchildren were born. She especially enjoyed cooking and other homemaking activities.She also enjoyed going to family reunions, including the Cochran family reunion at Wesley Chapel (her grandmother was one of the Cochran family living on Amicalola Mountain in the early 1900’s).

Geraldine especially enjoyed going to craft festivals and gospel singing events. Even during her last months at the nursing home, listening to church groups and others who came to sing helped to cheer her up.

Geraldine will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was the daughter of the late D.G. and Lucille Wood and was also preceded in death by an infant son, Dwight Alexander McClure.

Geraldine is survived by her husband of 56 years, Paul McClure; sons and daughters-in-law, Nathan and Peggy McClure, Mark and Lisa McClure, all of Dahlonega; sister, Norma Jean Dell, Louisville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Nathan and Abby McClure, Anna and Tony Miller, Sarah Grace McClure, Emily McClure, and Mary Catherine McClure. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. McClure were held Monday, November 4, 2013 at the Yahoola Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Rev. Lyman Caldwell and Rev. Terry Head officiated.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Larry Eugene Floyd, Jr.

Larry Eugene Floyd, Jr., age 50, of Dahlonega, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2013.

Larry was born and raised in Cuthbert, Ga. and had spent the past 15 years in Dahlonega. He received an Associates Degree from Andrew College in Cuthbert, worked in law enforcement for 18 years, and was a member of the North Georgia Amateur Radio Club. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Larry is survived by his parents, Larry E. Sr. and Betty M. Floyd, Dahlonega; daughter, Betsy Floyd, Douglasville, Ga.; sister, Rebecca Floyd Bonds, Dawsonville; and special friend, Ashley Ash, Gainesville, Ga.

A graveside service for Larry was November 3, 2013 at the Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery.

Rev. Lee Roy Hall officiated.

Mrs. Ann Lucille Brown

Mrs. Ann Lucille Brown, age 89, of Dahlonega, died Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Gold City Convalescent Center in Dahlonega.

Mrs. Brown was a native of Atlanta who had lived in Lumpkin County since 2005. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Carole Miller, Arkansas, Marie and Thomas West, Dahlonega; sons, Jimmy Brown, Valley, Alabama, Michael Brown, Dahlonega, David Brown, Maine, and Eddie Brown, Gainesville, Ga.. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives also survive.

A memorial service for Mrs. Brown was held November 5, 2013 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Zak McConnell

Zak McConnell, age 26, of Dahlonega, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013.

Zak was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County and an accomplished musician. He was a teaching assistant at the University of Georgia where he was enrolled in the MBA program. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Zak was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Sue McConnell, and Dillard and Gwen Norrell.

Zak is survived by his wife, Lacee Sheffield McConnell; parents, Frank J. “Mac” and Tona Norrell McConnell; and brother, Zeb McConnell, all of Dahlonega, GA. Numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, many friends, and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Zak were held Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Dahlonega Baptist Church.

Rev. Gene Davis, Rev. Michael Rogers, and Rev. Raymond Prince officiated.

Interment followed in the Bethlehem Jones Chapel Cemetery in Lumpkin County.
