Rev. William “Bill” Kirkland III

The Rev. William “Bill” Kirkland III, 86 of Dahlonega passed away May 22, 2013 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Ga. after an extended illness of many years.

He was born in Quitman, Mississippi to the late William and Eva Bonney Kirkland.

He is survived by his wife, Susanne Clark Kirkland of Dahlonega; son Felix Kirkland and wife Diane of Atlanta; daughter Antonia “Tony” Reed and husband Ray of Clarkesville, Ga.; stepson Brooks Clark and wife Rachel of Johns Creek, Ga.; step-daughter Tracey Clark Ragland and Tim Ragland of Dahlonega; grandchildren Dr. Bonney Reed-Knight and husband Paul, and Ian Kirland, all of Atlanta; Emily Reed Underwood and husband “Bo” and Jessica Clark, all of Athens; Collin Clark and Julia Clark of Johns Creek, Ga.; Christy Smith Wallace and great-grandson Robbie Smith of Jacksonville, N.C.; niece Vicky Alexander and husband Minter of Alexandria,Va.; cousin Jo Kelly Edwards and husband Richard of Birmingham, Ala. as well as many other cousins and relatives.

Bill was an Eagle Scout. He served as a medic in the Navy during WW II and was a Navy lieutenant in Pentagon during the Korean War.

He graduated from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and was a Real Estate broker and developer in Atlanta and Dahlonega and one of the organizers for the first Lumpkin County Board Of Realtors. In 1995 he was ordained as a Deacon of the Episcopal Church. His ministry was in Kairos Prison Ministry and working in the mental health community of northeast Georgia. He served the congregations of St. Clare’s Episcopal Church, Blairsville; Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Sautee-Nachoochee and after his retirement was associated with Saint Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Dahlonega.

Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Nell Felix Kirkland and infant son Kershaw Kirkland.

His memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1, at 3p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church on Hamp Mill Road, Dahlonega. Family will receive friends at 2 p.m. prior to the service. Internment will be in Quitman, Mississippi

Joan Wilkins Beall

Mrs. Joan Wilkins Beall, age 62, of Suches, Ga., passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013.

Joan was a lifelong resident of Suches and had spent several years in Douglasville. She had retired from the United States Postal Service and was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches.

Joan was a loving “Grammy,” wife and mother; and was a ray of sunshine to all who knew her.

Mrs. Beall was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Wilkins; father William Junior Pruitt and brother, Tony Pruitt.

Joan is survived by her husband Ben Beall; mother, Alma Pruitt, Suches; son and daughter-in-law, Ashley and Candi Wilkins, Dahlonega; daughter and son-in-law, Brandy and Bobby Miller, Suches; daughter, Tracy Wilkins, Kennesaw, Ga.; step-daughter and step son-in-law, Rebecca and Chad Jenkins, Hiram, Ga.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Marianne Pruitt, Suches; Mark and Terri Pruitt, Hogansville, Ga.; grandchildren, Abram and Elin Wilkins, Jayce, Poppy and Eli Jenkins; nieces, Morgan Pruitt and Morgan Rutledge; nephews, William Pruitt and Tyler Rutledge; extended family, Thelma Tow. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Joan were held Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Zion Baptist Church in Suches.

Rev. Gerald Edmondson officiated.

Interment followed in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches.

Darlene Marie Daxenbichler Kraft

Darlene Marie Daxenbichler Kraft, age 80, of Dahlonega, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013.

Darlene was born and raised in Peoria, Ill., spent a number of years in West Palm Beach, Fla., and the last 35 years in Lumpkin County where she co-founded Forrest Hills Mountain Resort in 1978. She was an outstanding member of Kiwanis and was Kiwanian of the year in 2005. She was a wonderful mother, a poet, a saxophone player during the Big Band era, and had a quick wit about her. Ms. Kraft was of the Catholic Faith.

Darlene was the daughter of the late Felix and Irma Koeppel Daxenbichler, and was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Joanna Kraft.

She is survived by son, Stephen Kraft, Washington State; daughter, Denise Roberson, Dahlonega; son, David Kraft, Dahlonega; daughter, Michele Kraft-DeBlois, Dawsonville; brothers, Bob and Melvin Daxenbichler, Peoria, Ill.; sister, Phyllis Jean Daxenbichler, Peoria, Ill.; and extended family, Frank and Joan Kraft, The Villages, Fla. Five grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

A funeral mass for Darlene was held Monday, May 27, 2013 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Dahlonega.

Father Neil Dhabliwala officiated.

Interment followed in the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Billy Andrew Gilbert

Mr. Billy Andrew Gilbert, age 86, of Dahlonega, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at his residence in Lumpkin County.

Billy was born and raised in Alpharetta, Ga. and had spent the last seven years in Lumpkin County. He served his country in the United States Army during WW II in Japan. He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Mr. Gilbert was the son of the late William Jasper and Velvie Elaine Moulder Gilbert, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Margie Louise Hyde Gilbert; son, Billy Joe Gilbert; granddaughter, Kayla Nicole Roub; brothers, Hollis, Howard, and J.W. Gilbert; and son-in-law, Clyde Cape.

Billy is survived by daughter, Patricia Cape, Bremen, Ga.; sons, John Gilbert, Woodstock, Ga., Ronald and Donald Gilbert, Dahlonega; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Dale Roub, Cleveland, Ga.; and brother, Jack Gilbert. Eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Billy were held Sunday, May 26, 2013 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Pastor Donnie Evans and Rev. Gwendell Gravitt officiated.

Interment followed in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Alpharetta.

Hugh Duncan Peck

Mr. Hugh Duncan Peck, age 85, of Dahlonega, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 following an extended illness.

Hugh was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was dearly loved by his family. He was a retired poultry farmer and was a member of Cavender’s Creek Baptist Church. Hugh also served his country in the United States Army.

Mr. Peck was the son of the late Thomas and Bessie Duckett Peck, and was also preceded in death by his brothers, Paul, Jewell and Henry Peck; sister, Jackie Bird.

Hugh is survived by his wife of 68 years, Johnnie Early Peck; daughter, Deborah Page, Dahlonega; sister, Sammy Saxon, Murrayville, Ga.; grandchildren, Chad Grizzle, Amy Anderson, Nolan Grizzle, all of Dahlonega. Great-grandchildren, Kolby Ray, Loagan Ray, Madison Ray, Cole Grizzle, Kaden Grizzle, Alexis Grizzle, Calla Grizzle, Emma Grizzle and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Hugh were held Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Cavender’s Creek Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Rev. Stephen Adams and Rev. Larry Forrester officiated.

Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Darlene Marie Daxenbichler Kraft, age 80, of Dahlonega, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013.
