Plant sale approaches March 1 deadline

The Lumpkin County 4-H Club and the Georgia Mountains Master Gardener Association are conducting a spring plant sale, offering high quality perennials, ferns, shrubs, blueberries and native plants at reasonable prices. Prepaid orders will be taken until Thursday, March 1. Order forms must be delivered to the Lumpkin County Extension office at 26 Johnson Street, Suite A, Dahlonega. Checks should be made payable to the Lumpkin County 4-H Club. SPLOST Town hall meeting Thurday

Learn more about the local SPLOST at a Town Hall meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Lumpkin County Parks YMCA, 365 Riley Road. Experts will explain the issues and answer questions. SPLOST will be on the March 6 ballot.

Retired teachers GALA Saturday

The Lumpkin County Retired Teachers Association will hold a Gala at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at The Market Place on the square. PartiGras! saturday to benefit Arts Council

PartiGras 2012, a benefit for the Dahlonega Arts Council, will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Achasta Club House. The event will feature hors d’oeuvres, a seated dinner buffet and a King Cake, live and silent auctions, and Zydeco and Dixiland music. Tickets are available at the Lumpkin County Visitors Center and DAC board members.

Scrabble Challenge returns Saturday

The annual Kiwanis of Lumpkin County Scrabble Challenge to benefit the children of the community will be held Saturday, Feb. 25 beginning at 1 p.m. at YMCA Parks & Rec. Categories of play include Junior (13 and under), High School (14-17 years of age), Adult and Learner’s Mode, which is open to all ages and can use a dictionary. Entrance fee is $5 for Juniors and $10 for all other categories. There will be raffle drawings, snacks and drinks and prizes for the winners. Walker lecture Monday opens “Affrilachia”

Frank X Walker, author, educator and poet, will deliver a keynote address Monday, Feb. 27, to open a series of events at NGCSU called “Affrilachia in Words and Images.” The series examines the African-American experience in Appalachia through expression in poetry and art. The presentation wil take place at 7 p.m. in the Health and Natural Science Building, Room 232.

Sheriff’s Dept. will wait tables March 4

Sheriff Stacy Jarrard will be taking orders and Sheriff’s Department employees and volunteers will be waiting tables Sunday, March 4, from 2-4 p.m. at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant. All tips and donations from the department’s “Waiting for a Cure” will benefit Lumpkin County’s Relay for Life.

Storytelling workshop, lecture March 5

Carmen Deedy, renowned story teller and writer, will present a story-telling workshop and a public lecture at NGCSU on Monday, March 5. The workshop, “There are No Mistakes in Storytelling,” will be held in the Library Technology Center’s Special Collections Room from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Space is limited and reservations are required (706-864-1540). The lecture will be given at 8 p.m. in the auditorium (Rm. 232) of the Health and Natural Sciences building, and no reservations are needed for that event.

Race benefits Rainbow Home March 3

Challenged Child 5K/Fun Run March 4

Challenged Child and Friends will hold its 20th Anniversary 5K and 1 Mile Fun/Run at Riverside Military Academy Sunday, March 4. Appalachian trail Trail-Fest March 16-18

Spring on Springer AT Trail Fest will be held March 16-18 in downtown Dahlonega and will celebrate the city’s designation as an AT Trail Community by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and Dahlonega’s position as the southern gateway to the AT during the NOrthBOund Thru Hiker kickoff season at Springer Mountain. The Trail Fest will include camping for hikers, speakers, films, music, shuttles, equipment vendors, and workshops. Free teen driving program offered Feb. 28

Georgia Teens Ride With P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error) is a free, national award-winning two-hour course designed to help parents and their new (or soon to be) teen drivers, ages 14-16, learn what they need to do during the 40 hours of supervised practice driving time required by Georgia law. This program addresses driver attitude, knowledge and behavior of both the parent and new teen driver; teens and parents must attend together. Lumpkin County Head Start/Pre-K will begin taking applications March 1 for its 2012-13 program year. Children will need to be age 3 or 4 by Sept. 1 in order to qualify. Members of the Chamber’s Leadership Lumpkin class will hold a furniture drive for the Waypoint Center, a religious based program to help men conquer their drug abuses. Diamond ring raffle benefits Pick & Bow

Georgia Pick & Bow is raffling off an 18-karat gold diamond ring with exquisite filigree, handcrafted by the renowned Whitehouse Brothers, a jewelry company famous for its unique designs. The ring, which has a retail value of $4,600, was donated to the local music program for children by an anonymous donor. It can be seen, and tickets can be purchased, at Studio Jewelers on the Dahlonega Public Square. Raffle tickets are $10 each or three for $25.
