Loyd Pool Gooch

Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland announces the death of Mr. Loyd Pool Gooch, age 72, of Dahlonega. Mr. Gooch passed away Wednesday , December 7, 2011

Funeral services wereheld Saturday, December 10, 2011 from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Lyman Caldwell, Rev. Terry Head and Rev. Andy Caldwell officiating. Interment followed in Yahoola Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Gooch was born into a farming family in Lumpkin County on June 22, 1939 to the late Pat and Winnie Caldwell Gooch. He retired from Burlington Industries Pine Tree Plant in Dahlonega after 32 years as Maintenance Director. Following his retirement, Mr. Gooch continued to work his farm, enjoy his family and friends and kept a keen eye on local, state and national politics. Mr. Gooch was a longtime member of Yahoola Baptist Church and in addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandson, Edward William “Will” Wells IV and his brother, Robert Gooch

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sylvia Fitts Gooch, Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Eddie Wells, Dahlonega, Carolyn and Tim Cummings, Dahlonega; brother, Dean Gooch, Dahlonega and sister Dorothy Woodward also of Dahlonega. Mr. Gooch is also survived by his grandchildren Ashley Ann Cummings and Wesley Walker Wells.

Larene Pitchford Anderson

Mrs. Larene Pitchford Anderson, age 88, of Cleveland, passed away Monday, December 5, 2011 at her residence following an extended illness.

Mrs. Anderson was born June 8, 1923 in Dahlonega to the late Robert and Ethel Lee Lomax Pitchford. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Raymond Anderson; grandson Adam Blake Anderson; sisters Flo May Christy and Mary Lou Anderson; brother Clarence Pitchford and a baby son. Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church #2.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Louise and Wayne Hatfield, Dahlonega; daughters Eloise Sutton, Annette Kirk and Lois Jackson, all of Cleveland; sons and daughters-in-law Eldon and Dorothy Anderson, Summertown, Tenn., Gerald and Jackie Anderson and Earl Dean and Mary Ann Anderson, both of Cleveland; son Virgil Anderson, Cleveland; sister Sylvia Jean Candler, Auburn; sister-in-law Myrtle West, Cleveland; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held December 8, 2011 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church No. 2. The Rev. Les Fuller, the Rev. Corey Anderson and the Rev. Chris Anderson officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Albert F. Woods

Albert F. Woods, 68, died Sunday, Dec. 4 at South East Ga. Health Systems in Brunswick, Ga.

Albert was a native of Sugar Hill and grew up in Dawsonville. He retired after 20 years as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. During his service, he served three years in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Mr. Woods was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Gilmore Woods.

He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Woods of Unadilla, Ga., Melissa King (Pete) of Hinesville and Michelle Cansler of Midway; three sons, Ricky Thurmond of Dawsonville, Michael Jerome Woods (Nancy) of Bloomingdale and James Albert Woods (Leigh) of Dahlonega; a brother, Tommy Fouts of Dawsonville; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held December 7 at the family residence in Hinesville. Graveside services were held December 8 at the Andersonville National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Joyce Carol Frye

Joyce Carol Frye, age 66, of Cumming, formerly of Dahlonega, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2011. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lendon Phillips; sisters, Betty Reed and Jewel Boulware; brothers, Carlton Butler and Johnny Butler.

Survivors include her son, Steve Frye of Cumming; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Jean Butler, Jimmy and Donna Butler, of Dahlonega; sister and brother-in-law Dean and Walter Duran of Oakwood; Oshi, her beloved dog; several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 15 at 3 p.m. at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Dahlonega. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., and Thursday from 9 a.m. until the hour of service.

Nancy Smith

Mrs. Nancy Smith, age 52, of Gainesville, Ga. died Monday, December 12, 2011 at her home following a sudden illness.

Nancy was born in Atlanta, grew up in Canton, Ga. and had lived in Gainesville for the past 33 years. She was a graduate of Cherokee High School, graduated in the last class at Hall School of Nursing before it became Brenau University School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for over 25 years. Nancy was a loving wife and great loving mother.

She was the daughter of the late Carl Ed Harbin and Mary Wynelle Graham Harbin.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 33 years, Jerry Smith, Gainesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Lindsay and Ronnie Shanley, Gainesville, Haley and Dwayne Lee, Gainesville; son, Cody Smith, Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Louis Lane, Maryville, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Jane Smith and special friend, George Moore, Canton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Debra and Mallory Smith, Reidsville, Ga.; two nephews and one niece. A number of other relatives also survive.

A memorial service to celebrate Nancy’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Rev. Lyman Caldwell, Rev. Phil Carpenter, and Rev. J.R. Fields will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 one hour prior to the memorial service and immediately following the memorial service.

David Lee Pfister

David Lee Pfister, 60, passed away December 3, 2011 at home following a short illness.

Born in Souix City, Iowa, he spent much of his life in Naples, Florida, but found a real home in his beloved Dahlonega.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Lou Pfister.

Dave was preceeded in death by his father, Leroy Pfister. He is survived by his mother, Gloria Pfister; daughter, Heather Jo Caputo; sisters, Angela Pfister, Becky Dunnegan, Pamela Larson and Mary Isbecki. “Poppa Dave” was much loved by and adored his grandchildren Jennifer and Michael Rasmussen and great-grandson Ethan. Grateful to have such a wonderful stepfather are Mark Mesler and Emily Mesler Buffington. “Poppa Dave” was a fixture in the lives of grandchildren Stephen, Allie and Audrey Mesler, and Charlotte and Caroline Buffington as well and will be remembered for teaching shooting, building waterfalls in the creek and Easter egg hunts on the golf cart.

Dave served four years in the Air Force as a helicopter mechanic. He owned a flooring business in Naples for many years before retiring to Dahlonega. An avid hunter and never one to sit around for long periods, Dave enjoyed many years at the Etowah Valley Sporting Clays park as both a part-time employee and friend to many. He was often joined by his faithful dog, Tyson.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the Dahlonega Funeral Home for their professional and respectful care of the arrangements.

Dave will be greatly missed by family and many friends.

There will be a Memorial Service in celebration of the life of David Lee Pfister on January 9, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. at the Etowah Valley Sporting Clays club house.

Laura Bell Collins

Mrs. Laura Bell Collins, age 90, of Dahlonega, died Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the Gold City Convalescent Center in Dahlonega.

Mrs. Collins was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Dahlonega. She was a homemaker, retired poultry farmer, and also worked for a number of years at the Burlington Pinetree Plant in Dahlonega.

Laura Bell was the daughter of the late James M. Higgins and Martha Jarrard Higgins and was also preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Luther J. Collins; son, Don Collins; daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Gene Walker; sister, Lula Scott; brother, Rallie Higgins; and nephew, Carlton Higgins.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Maxcine and Hartwell Ricketts, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law, J.L. and Carolyn Collins, Dahlonega; daughter-in-law, Melanie Collins, Dahlonega; grandchildren, Tammy Stowers, Troy Walker, Jamie Ricketts, Shannon and Mitchell Collins, Bryan and Ginger Collins; nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Barbara Roper and Barbara Moore; nephew, Grady Higgins. Numerous other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Collins were held Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated.

Interment followed in the Bethlehem/Jones Chapel Cemetery in Dahlonega.
