Mr. Paul J. Apt

Resident of Dahlonega

Mr. Paul J. Apt, 90, longtime resident of Dahlonega, died April 27, 2014, in Webster, Fla.

Born in Chicago, Ill., Paul was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar C. Apt. He was married to the late Dorothy McClure Apt for 55 years. Paul was a Miami Edison graduate. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran who served as an Aviation Radioman during World War II. Upon discharge from the Navy, Paul earned a B.A. Degree in Business and underwent undergraduate work at the University of Miami. He was Comptroller at the U. of M., retired to Dahlonega, later returning to Central Florida.

Paul enjoyed traveling, camping, walking on the beach, bicycling, cars and motorcycles. He collected knives and liked carving wood. He loved dogs. Paul is survived by his daughter, Jan Marie Crafton, of Bushnell, Fla.; and sons, David Paul Apt of Gainesville, and Carl Wesley Apt of Flowery Branch, Ga.; grandchildren, Lance Alan Wisely, Jamie Marie Bertolomi, and Paul Cody Apt.

James George “Jimmy” Burns 76, of Dahlonega, Ga., passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Mr. Burns is a lifelong native of Dahlonega.

Mr. Burns is preceded in death by his parents, Gorden and Lula Fields Burns and sister Margert Hogan.

Mr. Burns is survived by his loving wife Jane Thomas Burns, children Jimmie Ann Burns of California, Clinton and wife Debbie Bryan of Dahlonega, Bruce and wife Jan Bryan of Dahlonega; mother-in-law Wanda Thomas of Dahlonega, grandchildren Ben Bryan of Dahlonega, Emily Bryan of Habersham, Sammy Bryan of Blairesville, William Bryan of Dahlonega, Kari Bryan of Royston, great-grandson Cayden Bryan; and numerous other relatives also survive. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Philippi Baptist Church in Dahlonega. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Rev. Jason Fuller, Rev. Andy Caldwell and Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated.

Mrs. Imogene Stover Gibson

Resident of Dahlonega

Mrs. Imogene Stover Gibson, age 78, of Dahlonega, Ga. died Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Northeast Ga. Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga.

Mrs. Gibson spent most of her life in Lumpkin County and was a member of Nimblewill Baptist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Floyd and Mae Moss Stover.

Imogene is survived by her husband of 56 years, John Gibson; brother and sister-in-law, Junior and Kathy Stover; special niece, Tammy Stover, all of Dahlonega, Ga. Numerous family and friends also survive.

Funeral services for Imogene were held Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega. Rev. Todd Skinner officiated. Interment follow in the Nimblewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Wayne E. Thomas

Resident of Dahlonega

Wayne E. Thomas, 77, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Emory Johns Creek Hospital following a period of declining health.

Born July 27, 1936 in Blairsville, Ga. to the late Loy and Evia Thomas, he had been a resident of Dahlonega for the past year after living in Gilmer County from 2000 until 2013. He had also previously lived in Lilburn. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dawsonville and a U.S. Army Veteran who served from 1959 until 1965. He retired after 30 years of service with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company where he worked as a computer systems trainer. A devoted husband and father, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Verdell M. Thomas.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Pam Thomas, Lilburn, Rev. Keith and Cerena Thomas, Dahlonega; sisters in law, Nina Moss, Dahlonega, Opal Beaver, Lilburn; grandchildren, Christy Cassidy, Katlin Sims, Joshua Thomas, Carissa Thomas, Timothy Thomas, Laura Thomas; and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 5, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Dawsonville. Dr. Jim Gaines officiated. Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Young Harris.
