Jack Barton Dowdy

Resident of Dahlonega

Jack Barton Dowdy, age 80, of Dahlonega, Ga. died Friday, April 25, 2014 at Gold City Convalescent Center in Dahlonega, Ga.

Jack was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, graduate of Lumpkin County High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Blue Mountain Masonic Lodge in Dahlonega. Jack was of the Baptist faith.

He was the son of the late Floyd and Estelle Jones Dowdy.

Jack is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Martha Dowdy, Dahlonega, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Vickie and Stevie Eaton, Randy and Elaine Dowdy, and Jimmy Dowdy. Five great-nieces and nephews, four great-great-nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Jack were held Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega. Rev. Lyman Caldwell and Rev. Roger Stover officiated. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County with Masonic graveside rites.

Dr. Kathleen “Suzy” Gruenhagen

Resident of Dahlonega

Dr. Kathleen “Suzy “ Gruenhagen, age 77, of Dahlonega, Ga. passed away May 8, 2014.

Suzy was a New Jersey native who had lived in Dahlonega since 1992, where she was a faculty member at North Georgia College teaching Special Education subjects until retiring in 2002. Even after retiring, she continued to teach and interact with her special education graduate students. Suzy was an active member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church. She was truly a pillar of the parish, a founding member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, and the memorial garden. She was tirelessly active as a servant leader in so many ways for so many years. Her passion for gardening is evident not only at St. Luke’s but at various places around Dahlonega where she and her fellow Master Gardners have applied their talents. Never one to sit idle, Suzy has traveled widely in both Europe and the United States. When at home, Suzy enjoyed reading and entertaining, most often hosting dinner and book club groups. Suzy leaves behind a legacy of total commitment to her church, community and scores of friends that loved her deeply.

“Suzy” was the daughter of the late Ernest James Hartelius and Francis Jeannette Hartelius. Her husband, Eppler W. Gruenhagen, precedes her in death. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Gruenhagen, Tampa Fla.; Amy (Bob) Nugent, Binghamton, N.Y.; Jane (Stuart) House, Coral Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren, Meghan, Bryce, Brendan and Connor Nugent; Sara and Allison House; step-mother, Boude Mason-Hartelius and step-sister, Penny Peed both of Hampton, Va.

The family will receive friends at the Banister Funeral Home of Dahlonega, 2068 Highway 19 North, on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 6-8 p.m.

A funeral mass for Suzy is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Dahlonega. Father Neil Dhabliwala will officiate.

Following the interment at Dahlonega Memorial Park a reception will be held at St. Luke’s Parrish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Memorial Garden Fund at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 91 North Park Street, Dahlonega, Ga. 30533.

Mrs. Cheryl Mullins Sullivan

Resident of Dahlonega

Mrs. Cheryl Mullins Sullivan, age 66, of Dahlonega, Ga. passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Emory University Hospital.

Cheryl was raised in Smyrna, Ga. and had spent the past 35 years in Dahlonega. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who had a great love for her family and many friends. She was an avid horse woman who enjoyed trips out west with her husband, Stan, and their horses after retiring from Bellsouth. She was a true cowgirl at heart. Cheryl attended Cowboy Church at various places and was of the Methodist Faith.

The daughter of the late Roy Lee and Evelyn Smith Mullins, Mrs. Sullivan was also preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Lee Mullins.

Cheryl is survived by her husband of 44 years, Stan Sullivan; son, Sean Sullivan; grandson, Lukas Sullivan; both of Cleveland, Ga.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Elizabeth Sullivan, Villa Rica, Ga.; special cousins, Regina Flowers, Beech Island, S.C., Pete and Linda Herren, Powder Springs, Ga., and Linda and Rodney Floyd, Acworth, Ga. Many loving friends and a number of other relatives also survive.

A memorial service for Cheryl is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega. Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 1 p.m. until time of service at 4 p.m.

Don Waters

Resident of Dahlonega

Don Waters, age 69, of Dahlonega, Ga. passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Chestatee Regional Hospital.

Don was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He retired from Mohawk Industries where he was a department manager. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who also loved his animals, along with spending time at the beach.

Don was the son of the late Roy Frasure and Myral Waters Frasure, and was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law Frank Smith and niece, Stephanie Holtzclaw Helton.

He is survived by his wife, Tara Hamilton Waters; daughter, Donna Mauro, Delmar, Del.; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and John Barber, Gainesville, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Tonya Cantrell, Dahlonega Ga.; brother, David Holtzclaw, Dahlonega, Ga.; sisters and brother in-law, Charlotte Smith, Lilburn, Ga., Wanda and Leon Gilleland, Lilburn, Ga.; six grandchildren; one great grandchild and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Don were held Friday, May 9, 2014 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated. Interment followed at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
