Loy Chester

Resident of Dahlonega

Loy Chester, age 88, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday February 23, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Born September 23, 1925 in Dawson County to the late Fate and Rachael Chester, he lived most of his life in Lumpkin County. For many years Mr. Chester worked in the timber industry and farmed. He was a beekeeper and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Loy was a loving husband and father who was devoted to his family. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Bertha Lou Chester; eight brothers and a sister. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Glenda and Perry Weaver, the loving staff at Foothills Assisted Living, and for the loving attention of his nurses.

Surviving are his children, Daniel Chester, Gainesville; Kathy and Junior Stover, Dahlonega, Gary and Nicki Chester, Dahlonega, Tony and Jan Chester, Dahlonega; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held February 25, 2014 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. L. C. Bennett and Rev. Jimmy Chester officiated. Interment followed in the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Tasha Nicole Sharp Wayne

Resident of Dahlonega

Mrs. Tasha Nicole Sharp Wayne, age 27, of Dahlonega, Ga. died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga.

Tasha was a lifelong resident of the Lumpkin County area, a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Lee Sharp.

Tasha is survived by her husband, Doug Wayne, Dahlonega, Ga.; sons, Andrew Lee Wayne and Austin Douglas Wayne; her mother, Serena Welch, Dahlonega, Ga. Numerous other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Tasha were held Friday, February 21, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Bob Pickelsimer

Resident of Dahlonega

Mr. Bob Pickelsimer, age 82, of Dahlonega, Ga., died Saturday, February 22, 2014 at his home.

Bob was born in Fannin County, Ga. July 31, 1931. He had lived in Dahlonega for more than 30 years. He was a former resident of Suches, Ga. He was a retired service man with Tyson Foods and was of the Baptist faith.

Bob was the son of the late Allen Pickelsimer and Lois Cruse Pickelsimer and was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Cain Pickelsimer; and brothers, H.A. Pickelsimer Jr., Dell Pickelsimer, and Glenn L. Pickelsimer.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Aara Pickelsimer, Sunnyvale, Ca.; and his sister, Violet Harper, Dawsonville, Ga. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Bob were held Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Gerald Edmondson officiated. Interment followed in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery.

Colonel (Retired) Lynn B. Stull

Resident of Dahlonega

Colonel (Retired) Lynn B. Stull, United States Army, age 67, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, in Dahlonega, Ga.

Born on October 11, 1946, in Fargo, North Dakota, he was the son of the late Ainslee “Jack” and Virginia Stull. He was the loving husband of Carol B. Stull.

Col.(R) Stull served honorably in the United States Army for 31 years, first receiving his commission in 1968 from the Georgia State University. As a career Army Officer, he served as an infantry officer advisor in Vietnam, an ROTC instructor at Georgia State University, in 5th and 1st Special Forces Group, Alternate Specialty Foreign Area Officer, Director of Asian Studies US Army War College, and as Defense and Army Attaché to Malaysia. He retired in 1999 from the Army and ended his career working as a defense contractor with Special Operations Command.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is his brother Terry G. (Aletta) Stull, of Senatobia, MS, and daughters Marilyn N. Stull May of Cumming, Ga., Wendy A. Stull of Ft. Meade, MD, Kelly E. (Bradley) Bathgate of Willow Grove, PA, and Paige D. Stull of Quantico, VA, and granddaughters Katharine and Elizabeth May, Ava, Madeline, Charlotte, and Daley Bathgate.

A funeral service was held Saturday, February 22 at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega, Ga. Uniform for military service members will be Dress Blue, or service equivalent.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Animal League or the Florida Big Dog Rescue.

Mr. Jackie Garrett

Mr. Jackie Garrett, age 65, of Dahlonega, Ga. died Friday, April 18, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga.

Mr. Garrett was born April 22, 1948 and was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and was of the Baptist faith.

Jackie was the son of the late Floyd Garrett and Bertha Cain Garrett and was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Garrett.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Mearle Wetherford, Dahlonega, Ga.; sons and daughter-in-law, Mike and Crystal Garrett, Gainesville, Ga., Greg Garrett, Dahlonega, Ga.; brothers and sister-in-law, Wayne and Emily Garrett, Cleveland, Ga., Richard Garrett, Cleveland, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dearl Helton, Dahlonega, Ga., Doris and Edward Winkler, Cleveland, Ga., Bernice and Larry Collins, Gainesville, Ga., Rachel and Glen Foster, Dahlonega, Ga.; grandchildren, Joshua Garrett, Julian Garrett, Remington Garrett and Haley Wetherford. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Jackie were held April 21, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega. Rev. Bernice Collins officiated. Interment followed in Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Jimmie Sue Davis Head

Jimmie Sue Davis Head, age 72, of Dahlonega, Ga. died at her home on April 17, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. A native of Lumpkin County, she was the daughter of the late James and Ruby Davis.

Jimmie Sue was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Jewell Head of Dahlonega, Ga.; children, Lisa Justus of Dahlonega, Ga., Rhonda (Doug) Cochran of Murrayville, Ga. and Lane (Travis) Rider of Dahlonega, Ga.; much-loved grandchildren, Steve Justus of Atlanta, Ga., Brent Justus of Calif., T.J. Rider of Dahlonega, Ga., Trevor Rider of Dahlonega, Ga., Jessica York of Murrayville, Ga., Eli and Sarah Fuller of Lumpkin County; and great-grandchildren, Luke and Juliana York of Murrayville, Ga.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 19, 2014 in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. The Reverends Lance Fuller, Lyman Caldwell and Keith York officiated. Interment followed at Dahlonega Memorial Park.

Ken Lollis

Resident of Dahlonega

Ken Lollis, age 68, of Dahlonega, Ga. died Monday, April 14, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga. following an extended illness.

The son of the late Milford and Katie Glenn Lollis, Ken was born in Anderson, S.C., but spent most of his adult life in Lumpkin County. A very loving husband and father with a wonderful sense of humor, he was also an avid outdoorsman as well as a very talented welder and professional diver. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. Ken was a Deputy Sheriff in Anderson, S.C. in his younger years, welded for North Georgia Boat Docks in Forsyth County, and had worked at Timken in Dahlonega. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Ken is survived by his wife, Margie Miller Lollis; son and daughter-in-law, Heath and Kim Coleman, Cumming, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Wilburn Etheridge, Suches, Ga.; mother-in-law, Lois Miller, Dahlonega, Ga.; sister, Susan Templeton; brothers-in-law, James and Archie Miller, Dahlonega, Ga.; grandchildren, Tiffany Dale and fiancé, Chad Fulton, Dakota, Rebecca, and Levi Etheridge, and Ava and Bryn Coleman; niece, Katie Nixon, S.C.; great nephews, Blake and Brandon Nixon, S.C.; and special family members, Perry and Glenda Sue Weaver. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Ken were held Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Jr. Abernathy and Rev. Phill Miller officiated. Interment followed in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

William H. “Bill” Shirley

Resident of Dahlonega

William H. “Bill” Shirley, age 92, of Dahlonega, Ga. passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Bill was born and raised in Lavonia, Ga. before moving to Lumpkin County in 1991. He was a man of great faith, had worked many years at Moore’s Hardware, and was a volunteer at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega. Bill was a proud WWII veteran having served his country in the United States Army.

Bill was the son of the late Carlton and Nettie Campbell Shirley, and was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Shirley and Dan Shirley; and sister, Josephine Shirley Tribble.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Amy Payne Shirley; daughter, Carla Shirley Long, Franklin, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie Shirley Patty and Ken Patty, Sugar Hill, Ga.; and grandchildren, Kaylin Long, Taylor Long, and Connor Patty. Several nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives also survive.

A memorial service for Bill will be held at a later date.

Tommy Lester Thomas

Resident of Dahlonega

Tommy Lester Thomas, age 67 of Dahlonega, passed away on April 20, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following and extended illness.

Mr. Thomas was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County and member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He was a member of the Farmhouse Friends at Farmhouse Produce. Mr. Thomas was also a Vietnam Veteran and served from 1966-1968 where he earned a purple heart.

Mr. Thomas retired from Cargill, Inc. after 35 years where he was employed as a maintenance specialist.

He is preceded in death by his parents Marvin Thomas and Jesse Camelia Thomas and brother Nicky Thomas.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Susie Thomas of Dahlonega, Ga.; sons and daughters in law Kevin and Pamela Thomas of Dahlonega, Ga.; Kurt and Sabrina Thomas of Atlanta, Ga.; Sister and brother in law Sue and Jerrell Sullens of Dahlonega, Ga.; grandchildren Bo, Van, Jolene, and Levon Thomas of Atlanta, Ga.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. April 23, 2014 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, he will be placed in state at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow the service at the church Cemetery, Dahlonega, Ga.

Rev. Darren Palmer, Rev. Les Fuller, and Rev. David Skinner will officiate.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to Mt. Olive Baptist Church or Gideons International, Lumpkin County Camp.
