Bob Anderson

Mr. Bob Anderson, age 54, of Dahlonega, passed away Thursday, October 24.

Mr. Anderson was born in San Diego, California and resided in Georgia for the past 34 years.

Bob served in the Hall County Fire Department for 20 plus years and retired as a Captain. While serving, he became director of 911 Emergency Services and founded the Hall County Fire Department Color Guard. He was most recently employed with Mobile Communications as a Project Manager and Wireless Network Engineer.

Bob is survived by Janet Lynn Anderson his wife of 29 years, son Zach and his wife Kelly of Savannah, currently serving in the Armed Forces; daughter, Savannah, currently enrolled at Berry College Pre-Med; son, Nicholas, currently enrolled at University of North Georgia and is awaiting shipment for Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy; father, Herman Wilson Anderson, 93 of Cleveland; and mother and father-in-law Edward and Bonnie Gabriel of Oakwood. Mr. Anderson is also survived by a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Olive Anderson.

Bob was a perfectionist and excelled in every aspect of his life. He loved God, his family, his many friends, his pets, his job, his motorcycle, traveling and football.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 28 at Little & Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville. Pastor James Thompson, Pastor Tony Smith and Pastor Danny Jarrard officiated the ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Georgia Fireman’s Burn Foundation, The Shriner’s Burn Foundation, or the Gideon’s International North Hall Camp.

Herschel Forrest Scott

Mr. Herschel Forrest Scott, age 81, of Dahlonega, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013.

Herschel was born and raised in Alpharetta, Ga., and had spent the last 20 years in Lumpkin County. He retired after 32 years as an electrician for Tingue Brown Company. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and brother, and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Scott was the son of the late Ralph and Lucile Garmon Scott, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Syble Scott; great granddaughter, Amber Norris; and son-in-law, Danny Jackson.

Herschel is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Tammy Scott, Dahlonega; Miles and Penny Scott, Lula, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Ronnie Vaughan, Dahlonega; daughters, Elaine Jackson, Dahlonega, and Vickie Payne, Winder, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Sandra Scott, Winder; and niece, Julie Fogg, Cumming. Ten grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and a number of other relatives also survive.

A graveside service for Herschel is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Douglasville, Ga.

Grandson Scotty Garner will officiate.

Carolyn Smith Pruett Banta

Carolyn Smith Pruett Banta, age 60, of Dahlonega, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013.

Carolyn was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, a loving mother and grandmother. Working as an LPN at Gold City Convalescent Center, she had also furthered her schooling to become a Microcomputer Specialist. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Banta is preceded in death by her parents, Ance L. and Irene Gable Smith; son, Michael Ance Pruett; and grandparents, Rev. Charlie C. and Carrie Smith, and Lewis and Mamie Gable.

Carolyn is survived by her son, Mickey Pruett; daughter-in-law, Lynn Mayfield Pruett; brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Sherry Smith; and grandchildren, Harley Irene Pruett, James, Kimberly and Johnathan Blackwell all of Dahlonega. Several nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Carolyn were held October 29, 2013 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated.

Interment followed in the Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Dora Rose Maupin Merck

Dora Rose Maupin Merck, age 33, of Dahlonega, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013.

Dora was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County and had worked as a vet assistant for Dahlonega Veterinary Clinic at one time. She had a great love for her family and animals, and was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Mrs. Merck is preceded in death by her father, William David Maupin, and her step-father, David Davis.

Dora is survived by her husband, John Merck; son, William David Merck; mother, Janie Sue Maupin, all of Dahlonega; brother, “Little Pete” Maupin, Las Vegas; and sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer Lynn and Eric Fitt, Louisiana. Several aunts, uncles, and numerous other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Dora were held Monday, October 28, 2013 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated.

Inez Dixie Byers Elliott

Mrs. Inez Dixie Byers Elliott, age 85, of Dahlonega, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013.

Mrs. Elliott was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County where she spent 66 years of marriage to Leroy Elliott as a homemaker. She was the last survivor of the late George W. and Omia Reeves Byers. She was well known for her Southern cooking, and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lumpkin County. She was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Inez is survived by her husband of 66 years, Leroy Elliott; son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Alice Elliott, Dahlonega; daughter, Elaine Elliott, Duluth, Ga.; and grandson, C.J. Elliott, Dahlonega.

Funeral services for Inez were held October 21, 2013 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Rev. Phillip Partin and Rev. David Bost officiated.

Interment followed in the St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Elizabeth Head

Mrs. Elizabeth Head, age 88, of Plainville, Ga., passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013 following an extended illness.

Mrs. Head was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, and had spent the last 15 years in Plainville, Ga. where she loved spending time traveling with her husband Loye in their RV. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mamie Webb Mosley, and was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Loye Head; grandson, Jeffrey Ballard; son-in-law, Wayne Ballard; and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Head is survived by daughter, Mildred Ballard, Calhoun, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Kay Head, Gray, Tenn., Richard and Joyce Head, Murrayville, Mark and Carole Head, Plainville, Ga.; grandchildren, Lisa Duball, Michael Allen Head, Jody Head, Nicole Jarrard, Ashley Atwood, Michelle Head, and McKayla Head. Eleven great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Elizabeth were held October 26, 2013 at Concord Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Terry Cornelious Rowe

Terry Cornelious Rowe, 72 of Dahlonega, passed away on Saturday,

October 19, 2013 at his residence after a short illness.

He was originally from Joanna, S.C. He was transferred to Dahlonega by the Torrington Bearings Company in 1979. He was a member of Dahlonega Baptist Church. Terry was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved reading and watching John Wayne movies.

He is preceded in death by his parents, F.C. and Gillette Rowe and son, Michael Chuvala.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Shirley Rowe of Dahlonega; sons, Dean and Lisa Chuvala of Dahlonega, Scott and Carmen Rowe of Caledonia, Miss.; sister, Paulette Edmonds of Joanna, S.C.; brother, Frank Rowe of Joanna, S.C.; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Eugene and Shelby Thompson of Greenwood, S.C., Joyce Wilkerson and Douglas Weddle of Prosperity, S.C.; grandchildren, Lindsey Rowe, Lance, Kayleigh and Megan Chuvala, Lauren Keene and Megan Castaing and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Dahlonega Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phil Miller officiating.

Mr. Juan Wilburn Garrett, better known as “J.W.,” age 84, native and lifelong resident of Suches, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at his home. Graveside services for the family were held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches, with Rev. George Burch and Rev. Rudy Tribble officiating. Bennett F. Shelton, Jr.

Resident of Mansfield

Bennett F. Shelton, Jr., age 75, of Mansfield, Ga., passed away peacefully at his home on December 29, 2013 surrounded by his beloved family. He fought bravely an extended illness of cancer and other complications.

He was born July 9, 1938 in Atlanta. A celebration of his life will be held January 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Mansfield Baptist Church, 101 Woodlawn Road, Mansfield, Ga., 30055 with Dr. Jeffery R. Perkins, Senior Pastor, officiating.

Bennett served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and was a Shriner since 1968. He was a self-employed pipeline contractor for over 40 years.

He is survived by his wife Frances L. Shelton; sons Bennett F. Shelton, III and his wife, Julie, Jason G. Shelton, Shay P. Shelton; stepson, R. David Kenimer and his wife Tammy; stepdaughter Sandra L. King and her husband James E. King, Jr.; sister Kitty D. King and her husband James, Sr.; brother Darwin E. Shelton (Buck) and his wife Susan; two nephews, one niece, 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Bennett was preceded in death by his father Bennett F. Shelton, Sr., and mother Jewel D. Shelton.

Dorothy Hamilton Turner

Resident of Dahlonega

Dorothy Hamilton Turner, age 85, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at her residence following a sudden illness.

Born May 21, 1938 in Winder, Georgia to the late Fred and Katie Hamilton, she had been a resident of Lumpkin County for the past 25 years, having moved from Cobb County. Mrs. Turner was a very talented seamstress and was an active member of the Dawson County Historical Society. Affectionately known as “Dot” and “Mema” by her family and friends, she was also preceded in death by nine siblings.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Clinton W. Turner, Sr., Dahlonega; daughters and son in law, Patricia Ann Turner, Dahlonega, Rosemary and Steve Inlow, Dahlonega; son and daughter in law, Clinton W., Jr. and Cindy Turner, Kennesaw; sisters and brother in law, Virginia Hamilton Shaw, Cartersville, Polly and Robert Evans, Monroe; brother, Paul Hamilton, Hoschton; grandchildren, Beth and Bill Harper, Amy and Chris Dunn, Suzy and Frank Madonna, Sofi Turner, Tucker Turner; great granddaughter, Berkley Harper, a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday January 6, 2014 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. J.R. Fields officiated. Interment followed in the Dawsonville City Cemetery.

Walter “Bud” Benedict Becker

Resident of Dahlonega

Walter “Bud” Benedict Becker, age 88, of Dahlonega, Georgia, passed away on December 31, 2013 in Dahlonega at home surrounded by his family.

Walter was born in New York City on June 14, 1925. He was married to Anna Julia Olson on November 6, 1948. The two were married for nearly 62 years prior to Anna’s passing, living in New York City, West Cornwall, Connecticut, Ellijay and Dahlonega, Georgia. He worked for Torrington Company in Torrington, Connecticut for 26 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific in the 32nd Infantry Division.

Walter is preceded in death by his wife, Anna, and his brother, Alan.

Walter is survived by his two sons, Donald Becker and David Becker, daughter-in-law Patricia Shoaff Becker and grandson, Ryan Mahoney and his wife Lindsay Mahoney and many other loving family members and friends.
