Online Poll
Lately there has been much discussion about whether the county should continue to provide funds for local charities. What's your opinion?
Of course they should! These charities are vital to the community.
It's a nice idea, but it's not the county's role.
We need to figure out if it's legal first.
I'm not sure.

LSCO hosts cop-style camp

Crime scene tape and riot gear may not be synonymous with summer camp, but the seventh graders in Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office Junior Law Enforcement Academy didn't seem to mind one bit.

The 31 local students were eager to forgo s'mores and swimming pools as they participated in a week-long day camp with sufficiently action-packed events recently.

Activities included target practice at the firing range, patrol car training with go-carts and a visit to the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve with local animal control officers.

In one afternoon the students watched as K-9 search dogs Darth and Jager honed their attack skills on a heavily padded deputy. The campers gasped as the canines launched themselves at their intended target.

Earlier that day, students got the chance to hone their CSI skills by studying a faux murder scene in which the victim, a bearded dummy, met a particularly grisly fate in a poker game gone bad.

The campers intently studied the evidence while taking notes and composing sketches.

Prior to that, an officer tossed a “flash-bang” grenade into the center of the Lumpkin High School School track in order to demonstrate exactly how the shrapnel-free explosive earned its name.

The ensuing blast was met with reverent awe from the campers.

“Duude,” responded one young onlooker.

The week culminated with an awards banquet in the Lumpkin County Parks & Rec. meeting hall.

Micaela Reynolds took home the Top Gun Award for her sharp shooting skills.

Dylan Garrett won first place for his smooth handling of the Emergency Vehicle Operator driving course. Sarah-Anne Payne was named the best crime scene investigator, while Evan Bafile, Malia Gaddis and Reynolds took top honors in the essay contest.

“I think it went great,” surmised coordinating officer Sgt. Steve Hemphill. “All the kids seemed to be very enthusiastic throughout the whole week.”

Personal attacks will not be allowed either.
For example, if Mr. Fill-in-the-Blank says something you don't agree with, don't tell the world that Mr. Fill-in-the-Blank is a no good dirty scoundrel who cuts off people in traffic and has owed you $20 since 1997. The Nugget asks you to please just stick to the issues at hand. That way we'll keep the debate lively, without getting personal. And remember, above all else, keep it civil and directed at the topic that's being discussed.
